About Me

Being With You

I am a white, hetero, able bodied, cis male who is committed to challenging how patriarchy, white supremacy, hetero-normativity, classism, and ableism exist in my life and practice as a therapist. I have a strong desire and intention to learn more about the experiences of BIPOC, LGBTQA+ community, and people with disabilities. I do this by listening to how systems of oppression impact the lives of oppressed communities; gaining the knowledge of how these systems of oppression exist in our culture and their impact on mental health; and integrating these experiences into how I can better show up as a human and therapist. I recognize that the mental health field has prioritized making sure that capital continues to grow by whatever means necessary at the expense of oppressed people. I am here to sit with the pain these systems have caused and to struggle with my clients on how to exist in an oppressive world while fighting for a better tomorrow. I am informed by past and current BIPOC clients, past and current LGBTQA clients, and cultural and clinical thinkers such as Mariame Kaba, Paulo Freire, James Baldwin, Keenega-Yamahtta Taylor, Frantz Fanon, and many others.

I am a Maine and New York licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and earned my master’s degree from Syracuse University. I have worked in a variety of settings, from rural community mental health and substance use clinics in Upstate New York and Maine, to providing sex and couples therapy in New York City. At the core of my therapeutic approach is an understanding that safe and secure relationships are healing, whether that’s through individual therapy, or supporting members of a partnership or family reconnect. I am guided by attachment theory, which hones in on how we experience ourselves and one another as emotional beings with deep desire to connect. I bring compassion, understanding, directness, and empathy to all my clients. I am an LGBTQA+ affirming, sex positive, poly-informed, and kink aware therapist.

Self Connection Fosters Healing

While working with individuals, I draw from emotion focused therapy, attachment theory, liberation based approaches, and somatic based approaches to help facilitate movement towards healing, wholeness, and self-connection. Based on my training and experience working with clients, I view mental distress not as pathology that we need to “fix”, but as an understandable process that is rooted in your history and present personal context. In our sessions I invite you to explore your pain and distress in new ways in order to then use whatever we learn together outside of sessions. In our sessions you can expect me to be active, engaging, and present with whatever you’re bringing into our space. I specialize in working with people who experience anxiety disorders, trauma related disorders, depression, substance use disorders, and/or low self-esteem/self-confidence. I have specific experience and interest working with the transgender, non-binary, and gender fluid community.

I also specialize in working with people who have had psychedelic experiences and want to integrate/understand what happened. I approach this work with non-judgement and open-mindedness, as I understand how strange these experiences can feel. I am informed by Stanislov Grof, who is a founder of Transpersonal Psychology and has laid the groundwork for understanding psychedelic experiences. Please note that I do not work with illegal psychedelic substances and will not guide/facilitate psychedelic sessions nor will I refer you to an underground therapist. I do not give advice or preparation information on how to use illegal psychedelic substances. I am now offering ketamine assisted psychotherapy for people living in Knox, Waldo, and Lower Penobscot counties.

Re-establishing Healthy Relationships

*I am pausing my work with couples/partners at this time. If you need referrals, please email me.*I have worked extensively with couples, partnerships, and other relationship formations who come see me because of issues including communication, sexual intimacy, and substance use disorders. I draw upon Emotion Focused Couples Therapy (EFT), which is an approach informed by attachment theory and utilizes experiential exercises. EFT helps members in a relationship identify and team up against their negative cycle while helping them identify their core beliefs, emotions, and needs to help them heal and create a new communication cycle that is supportive, safe, and secure. I also utilize the same approach to working with families to help them establish communication strategies that foster safe and secure connections with all members.

Fun facts

I am originally from Texas (cowboy boots are a staple of my wardrobe). I have a black belt in tae kwon do. I am a practitioner of yoga and mindfulness meditation. I am deeply involved in community organizing around drug policy and moving away from a punishment/carceral based system.

I am now offering Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP). KAP is a form of therapy that utilizes the psychedelic effects of ketamine in combination with psychotherapy.
