Therapy For The People (TFTP) was conceived and founded by Dani Fazio, LCSW, Noah Krell, LCSW, and Craig Cardamone, LMFT, and is currently co-owned by Dani and Noah. We opened our therapy co-working space in February 2020 at 57 Exchange Street in Portland, Maine. We were inspired to create a supportive environment for therapists starting or building their private practices that incorporates our shared values of community as healing, dignity, and meeting people where they are—something that didn’t yet exist in Maine. We incorporate social and economic justice practices in our approach to business and rely on the needs of our members to shape our decision making. In addition to being co-owners and stewards of the business and offices, Dani and Noah are also TFTP members, operating their practices and providing therapeutic services to people throughout Maine.

Our Values in Action

Connection as Healing

Connection is a powerful antidote to suffering, and is the foundation of radical healing and of therapy. Our co-working space provides much-needed community for therapists who thrive when working alongside values-aligned practitioners.

Dignity

We believe all people have inherent worth and value, and deserve to be treated with respect and have their strengths celebrated. We practice therapy with intentionality in the pursuit of equity, justice, and radical hope.

Meeting You Where You Are

We affirm and honor that you are the expert of your own experiences. We meet our members and our clients with empathy, kindness, and support in whatever space, transition, or challenge they’re experiencing, without judgement.

LGBTQIA+ Mental Health

We proudly come together as a dedicated space for the queer & queer-allied community. It’s our priority to offer an environment that is welcoming, accessible, supportive, and responsive to all. We intentionally built our therapy co-working space for providers who share our values and demonstrate professional and enthusiastic allyship for people who identify as LGBTQIA+, gender-expansive, and relationship-expansive.

Our approach to improving emotional health is intersectional and humanistic. TFTP therapists are advocates for the rights of marginalized and oppressed people, and provide support in healing from the transphobic, homophobic, racist, cissexist/sexist, fat phobic, ableist, classist, and xenophobic climates and experiences that impact our daily lives and our mental health. We believe in strengthening rest and resilience against gender and/or sexual minority stress, institutionalized trauma, and other forms of harm to our communities and psyches. At Therapy For The People, pronouns matter, gender is an always-evolving social construct, sexuality flows along continuums, love styles and relationships of all configurations have inherent value, and we believe that you are the expert of your life and story.

Supporting People in Recovery

At Therapy For The People, you’ll be welcomed into a space for recovery and intentional living. For many, that means unlearning the patterns or messages that led to substance use, self-harm, codependency, abusive relationships, and/or problematic compulsive behavior, and learning to discover paths to radical healing. Our trauma-responsive and holistic approach will support you in stepping into your power in all parts of your life. We integrate evidence-based treatment modalities with your own wisdoms, motivation, internal resources, and strengths to set your compass towards healing.

Many of TFTP’s members are dually licensed therapists and provide co-occurring mental health and substance use disorder treatment. We offer comprehensive substance use disorder evaluations, individual therapy, couples & family therapy, support groups, and services and education for those who love someone in recovery. We can also make recommendations for other services if our outpatient level of care is not right for meeting your needs.

Whether you are sober-curious, currently using drugs and/or alcohol and are looking for ways to stop use or reduce harm, are maintaining months (or decades) of recovery, or are impacted by a loved one’s substance use, TFTP members are here to walk the path of recovery with you, as you guide the way.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs for people looking for a therapist

  • No, Therapy For The People is not an agency or a group therapy practice. We are a co-working space for individual therapists’ private practices. We don’t have a central reception desk, so please reach out to the therapist(s) you are interested in working with.

  • Yes! We believe having a choice about who you have therapy with supports the vitality of the work you do together. Unlike in many agency settings where you may not get to choose who you work with, the therapists at TFTP are members of our co-working space and operate their own private practices and make arrangements with new clients directly.

  • We suggest prospective clients spend time on our Find a Therapist page to learn more about each therapist and their areas of expertise and training. We encourage you to reach out to whomever you respond to most.

  • Each therapist at TFTP includes their email and phone number for prospective clients to contact to get the process started.

  • We encourage all prospective clients to discuss costs early with the therapist they would like to work with. Each therapist lists what insurance providers they accept on their member profile. If you do not have insurance, you can discuss sliding scale and ask about low cost options.

  • Our member therapists provide telehealth sessions, and many offer in-person options. If you have a strong preference, communicate this when reaching out to a therapist to determine if they can meet your needs.

  • No, we are here for everyone! Our mission is to be enthusiastic allies and to be a resource to the LGBTQIA+ community, but we are not exclusive providers. We believe sexuality and gender is a spectrum and inherently fluid. No matter how you personally identify past, present, or future, you will be welcomed as your authentic self with a TFTP therapist. Reach out to a therapist to see if they might be a good fit for you.

  • We opened our co-working space five weeks before the pandemic took hold in Maine in 2020, and decided to close for in-person sessions in March when it was advised to do so by the CDC. We have since re-opened, and it is at the discretion of each TFTP therapist if they are comfortable holding in-person sessions. We are committed to the safety of our members, clients, and guests. You can read all about our COVID updates, cleaning protocols, and details on our COVID updates page.

  • Our office is in Portland’s Old Port at 57 Exchange Street Suite 203. Our building and office suite are fully ADA accessible. Please explore our location page for more information.

  • Yes! Please let your therapist know in advance of your first in-person session if you have a service animal who will be accompanying you.

  • You can check out our currently active groups on our group therapy page. Email the group facilitator with questions.

  • Professional licensure guidelines state that therapists can only provide services to people who reside in the state they are licensed. If a member of our co-working space is licensed in states in addition to Maine, it will be listed on their personal profile page.

  • Thanks for thinking of TFTP! We don’t have a central reception desk and we are not a group practice or agency, so there is no one person or email address to send a referral. You can reach out to an individual therapist or encourage your client to reach out directly. Sending a referral request does not guarantee services. Please do not send any client PHI, charts, or other identifying information.

  • All clients and member therapists are welcomed and respected at Therapy For The People regardless of race, color, gender identity, sex, sexual orientation, age, national origin, creed, or disability.

TFTP currently has a small number of member therapists. As we grow our co-working space, we are interested in cultivating a more diverse member applicant pool. In order to provide the widest possible range of therapeutic opportunities, we are committed to building a member therapist community that better reflects the diversity of clients TFTP serves.

FAQs for Prospective Co-Working Members

  • Here are some words our members use to describe the community aspect of TFTP: Welcoming, supportive, collaborative, enthusiastic, like-minded, clinically-focused but down to earth, values-driven, creative, adaptive, interested in meeting challenges together, considerate, friendly. We encourage prospective members to schedule a tour and meet us.

  • Absolutely. One of the primary goals of TFTP’s business model is to support new therapists and provide business coaching in creating or growing their practices. Our co-owners can set up time for one-on-one in-person or Zoom meetings to advise on things like forming a business (LLCs, IRS registration, banking); setting up HIPAA compliant communication structures (work phone, fax, email, payment/ card services); general decision making around insurances, credentialing, billing, and more.

  • Yes, definitely! TFTP consults its members in making decisions about our co-working business practices, but there are no requirements or obligations imposed on how you conduct your private practice. The only exception to this has been related to COVID guidelines, and related safety decisions for all members, clients, and guests who come into the offices. TFTP does not take any percentage of your business income, and your membership fee is a business expense that is tax deduction.

  • Absolutely. TFTP receives requests for therapists regularly and we pass those along to our members.

  • Yes! Our therapists represent a range of sexuality and gender identities. Anyone who is committed to supporting LGBTQIA+ people’s mental health and healing, particularly those who understand the impacts of systemic oppression, is encouraged to apply to join as a member.

  • Our membership plan includes one day of office use, and additional days are available for an additional cost (scroll up on this page to see our rates outlined). Many therapists opt to use a hybrid model for their practices, offering telehealth from their home office in addition to in-person or telehealth sessions from the TFTP offices. Offices are shared among members, though we like to provide members the same office per day of the week to provide continuity and familiarity for their clients. Office space is subject to availability.

  • Yes, we would love that. Members have the option to host groups in the offices on recurring or one-time bases. Just talk to a co-owner about your ideas for support on making them happen. Space is subject to availability, fire code protocols, and current COVID guidelines.

  • Yes, many of our members store props to use in therapy sessions at the TFTP offices (e.g. blankets, yoga mats, art materials, books, fidgets). Additionally, we provide locked filing cabinets for members to keep charts or other confidential material secure.

• We are committed to the safety of our members, clients, and guests, and since the pandemic began have been making decisions as a full team of members and co-owners. You can read all about our COVID updates, cleaning protocols, and details here.
