About Me
Finding Your Innate Capacity For Healing
I am a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner and Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor. I work with children, teens and adults. While I am informed by many modalities, at the core of my work is the belief that relationships are vital to our growth and healing—relationship to self, relationship to family and friends, relationship to society, and the relationship between a therapist and a client. I strive to meet everyone who walks through my door with curiosity, an open-mind and deep respect. My role as a therapist is not to “heal” a person, but to help them find their own innate capacity for healing. I am a white, queer, cis, able bodied woman and acknowledge my immense privilege. I actively work to examine my own biases and am committed to offering a trauma-informed, anti-racist, anti-patriarchal therapy practice. I believe in the vital importance of healing from the traumatic impacts of systemic oppression and strive to hold the space for clients to do that work.
Specialties
I specialize in working with adults, teens and children struggling with complex trauma, single event trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, substance use disorders, and parenting. My approach is experiential and relational. My work is informed by attachment theory, existential psychotherapy, neuropsychology, Somatic Experiencing® and perhaps most importantly, from my own journey in recovery. I believe in a bottom-up approach to healing, which involves paying attention to the body by utilizing mindfulness and Somatic Experiencing®.
Somatic Experiencing
Somatic Experiencing® is a gentle, body-oriented approach to healing trauma and the lasting impacts of stress. Somatic Experiencing® views trauma as the body’s overwhelming response to perceived life threat. Trauma can result from a single event like a car accident, injury, assault or from the cumulative stress of experiences such as neglect, chronic abuse, loss, and systemic oppression. Symptoms of trauma can manifest in many ways including anxiety, depression, disconnection, interpersonal struggles, and isolation. When working somatically, we work slowly and break experience into small, manageable steps that do not overwhelm the nervous system. We track imagery, body sensation, movement, emotion and beliefs to help you move through energy in the body that has becomes stuck from traumatic events. In finding resolution to past stressors, we can find greater well-being and more resiliency to not only deal with future stressors but also to live more fully in the present moment.
