About Me

Background

My name is Patricia Duffett. I go by P or Patricia and use all pronouns. I am a licensed clinical social worker with more than 15 years of professional experience in several practice areas including crime victims’ services, alternative-to-incarceration programs, outpatient HIV/AIDS  care, and community mental health counseling. I am originally from New York and in 2015 I moved with my spouse and our pets to midcoast Maine. In 2022, I started my virtual psychotherapy practice at Therapy for the People and I love my work.

My approach to therapy

My practice is based on these core beliefs:

  • Each of us is worthy of unconditional love and respect.

  • The most important relationship we can have is with ourselves.

  • We heal and grow in the context of safe-enough relationships.

Loving and caring for ourselves is one of the bravest and hardest things we can do, especially when our identities have been and continue to be marginalized and devalued. To paraphrase the great Audre Lorde, loving and caring for ourselves is not a luxury. It is a basic necessity and the cornerstone of authenticity.

You are worth it

In my experience as a therapist and as a client, I know how empowering the process of therapy can be. Allowing ourselves to be vulnerable in the presence of a trustworthy, compassionate other is a particularly radical and effective tool for inner healing and social change. By committing the time, money, and space to this process, you are opening yourself up to a source of inner strength and calm that no one can give you and that no one can take away.
